4th WACCBIP bioethics workshop : What a very promising adventure for future researchers !

The West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), under its Wellcome Trust/AESA DELTAS programme, held the 4th in its series of the Bioethics workshops on responsible research conduct designed for postdoctoral fellows and institutional IRB coordinators.

This year’s training workshop, to which 23 participants took part, from 22 to 26 April 2019, was organised by the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) of the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB). Il took place at the Onomo hotel  in Bamako, and has been facilitated by three Bioethics lecturers.

These include: Prof. Mahamadou Diakite, Professor of Immunogenetics at the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako, Mali, Dr. Paul Ndebele PhD Office of Research Excellence Milken Institute School of Public Health George Washington University and Dr Morenike Oluwatoyin Ukpong, College of Health Sciences Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Several topics were discussed during the 5 days of training, among which we can mention : Anatomy ans physiology of a research protocol, responsabilities in health research, research ethics commitees and their functions,  ethical issues in social and behavioural research, informed consent, etc. During his presentation, Dr. Paul has defined ethics as principles of morality dealing with right or wrong of an action, Science of the study of ideal human behavior….He then recalled that ethics was not law and yet they were complimentary, « ethics can be proposed but cannot be imposed », according to him.

The closing ceremony of five days training was marked by several internventions. For Blessing Adigun, partipant from Uganda, without ethics there is no research, that is to say how important this training was. « I’m excited, because i learned a lot, i pray that God keep bringing sponsors for those king of training. Thanks for the opportunity », she said.

Prof. Diakité thanked the trainers for the quality of the courses offered, and congratulated the participants for their attendance. « Trainers and trainees, we are now a consortium and we have to make this network dynamic.. », he said. 

Note that the handing over of the certificates to the participants and the taking of family photos, have ended the five days training on the Bioethics.
